flag.gif (1121 bytes)  The Journy into Prague began with a 12 hour flight from Houston a layover in Toronto and finally my Czech destination.  As most of you already know, the Czech Republic was established on 1 January 1993. Accordingly, it is one of the youngest countries in the world; but not so young when you consider it was a part of the former Czechoslovakia, and at present it continues as a successor of this country. And even though Czechoslovakia's history began in 1918, there are much older historical traditions.

Prague (in Czech, Praha; in German, Prag) is one of Europe's great cultural centers. Since the early 19th century, Prague has been the "City of a Hundred Spires." It was built in a broad valley along the banks of the River Vltava and on the surrounding hills. The river is spanned by many bridges, of which the most famous is the Karlsbrcke (Charles Bridge), built in the 14th century and later embellished with statues of saints. The eastern bank of the river is the site of the Old Town, dating from the 13th century, and the New Town, built about a century later. The traditional heart of the city is the cobbled Old Town Square, which is surrounded by historical buildings
